Georadar Survey at PLNE Surabaya

PLN plans to carry out the construction of a new cable in the Kedinding area, Surabaya City, East Java. The situation and condition of these areas are residential land and urban industrial areas which are full of activities and activities with many existing buildings and installed utilities that have existed for a long time. Subsurface investigation activities are carried out to map the presence of utilities and also the possibility of other buried objects, especially for their location in the form of position and depth, which was carried out in September 2022, namely the Ground Penetrating Radar Survey (GPR) or Georadar. The Georadar Survey in Kedinding was carried out in a location that was densely packed with residents and motorized vehicles passing by every day. To overcome this, the Georadar Surveyor conducts data acquisition in densely populated locations and car traffic is carried out at night.

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey purpose is to detect the presence of installed utilities that are buried below the surface which can be in the form of pipes, cable lines, drainage channels or other utilities that are buried less than 5 meters from the ground surface or on asphalt roads. The GPR survey for this survey work uses the GPR MALÅ Easy Locator Core instrument which uses a 12 Volt Lithium-ion battery as a power supply which has a GPR data acquisition system operating with a frequency of 450 MHz. Operation and display of GPR measurement data is carried out with the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro Tablet platform connected to the GPR antenna wirelessly. This antenna can reach a maximum depth of up to 6 meters in ideal conditions.


The GPR survey has succeeded in finding two pipelines from the Kedinding substation to the T-junction of Jalan Nambangan. Three pipelines are on Jalan Nambangan, two of which are in the south, one lane is in the north of Jalan Nambangan, and three pipelines are on Jalan Kedung Cowek.
